Sword of Destiny is the second book of The Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski, first published in 1993. It consists of several individual stories. The stories include The Bounds of Reason, A Shard of Ice, Eternal Flame, A Little Sacrifice, The Sword of Destiny, and Something More.
The writer amazes me once again by how massive and immersive the world that he's built throughout the stories. How they help shape up the characters' depth and history. With dragons and monsters wandering around, it's hard to believe that the writer still makes the characters as relatable and grounded as ever. The conflicts within each character sometimes carry more weight than the monster-slaying.
I particularly like the story Something More. It's actually just an intermediary story, a setup for future plotlines. But it's so beautifully written. It highlights the inner conflict and fears within the titular character with the destiny that lies in his future. Also gives us a taste of the devastation that will come.
One thing I've never expected to see a lot from this series is the romance. It's surprisingly quite dominant in some stories. Like classic Disney fairy tales, but with more monsters, tragedies, and not-quite-happy endings.
