Circe - Madeline Miller

But in a solitary life, there are rare moments when another soul dips near yours, as stars once a year brush the earth. Such a constellation was he to me.

Circe is a novel by Madeline Miller, first published in 2018. The book tells the story of Circe, daughter of Helios, God of the sun. Unlike his father's other children, Circe was born different without the divinity traits that other immortals possess. She discovered witchcraft in her youth of isolation and was exiled to a lonely island because of it. There, she learned slowly where she truly belongs in the world of Gods that want nothing to do with her and mortals which she loves yet withers like autumn leaves as she lives for centuries to come.

Circe is yet another beautiful modern retelling of Greek mythology by Madeline Miller. The title character, Circe, holds some vivid parallels to The Song of Achilles' protagonist, Patroclus. They tell the story about the self-discovery of these characters, the journey they make to redeem themselves of their past mistakes, to find the will and reason to hold onto their futures. It's hard to not sympathize with Circe as she fights the might of the Gods to protect the new lives that she built in her new home.

Once again, the writer successfully wrote not just a great story about Greek Gods, but a great story about humans in general.
