Potongan Tubuh is a collection of 7 Korean short stories written by 7 different writers. This book is first published in 2019 and currently has only one edition. The book includes titles: Benar, Aku Seekor Jerapah? by Park Min-gyu, Pecinan by Oh Jung-hee, Istri Lelaki Miskin by Eun Hye-kyung, Tanah Milik Ayah by Lim Chul-woo, Menara Pasir by Jo Jung-tae, Sebatang Jarum by Cheon Un-yeong, and Potongan Tubuh by Pyun Hye-young. The stories are very different from each other, having different time or place settings.
Now, I'm not quite familiar with any Korean culture, so there are some stories that context I probably missed, especially title like Pecinan that has post-war-like settings around it. For most of the time, I have no idea what's what. But, the majority of the stories are very universal and I could understand them pretty well. Having no experience in any Korean literature, I found these stories to have a certain style to them. The plots are always very simple but the ways in which they're presented are very peculiar, intimate, and unapologetic. They're all also very ambiguous. It's like, the writers don't want to finish their paintings and ask you to do it instead, which is what great stories should always do, in my opinion.
Although I believe there's a lot of missing contexts, either lost in translation or in obscurity, I really enjoy this book a lot. The one that speaks to me the most was Istri Lelaki Miskin. The story was about a family of a husband, a wife, and their two children. They live in poverty with the husband works until late every single day. Having no longer felt love since the first time they met, the wife pours her loneliness and sadness into her diary. It's really melancholic and its simplicity makes the story even more real and memorable. I really really love it.
