Dunia Cecilia - Jostein Gaarder

We see everything everything in a glass, darkly. Sometimes we can peer through the glass and catch a glimpse of what is on the other side. If we were to polish the glass clean, we'd see much more. But then we would no longer see ourselves.

Dunia Cecilia (the original book is titled Through a Glass, Darkly) is a novel written by Norwegian author, Jostein Gaarder, that was first published in 1993. The story tells the story of Cecilia, a girl from Norway who was sick and had to spend her Christmas nights lying in her bed. One day, Cecilia had a visit from a curious angel in her bedroom. The angel, Ariel, asked Cecilia how it feels to be a human. In return, Ariel would tell her how it feels to be an angel.

This novel is a sweet and bitter story about us, humans. About how we look at our lives and the world we live in. About our ideal vision of after-life and the less sparkling image of the world that we live in right now. As Cecilia and Ariel learn about each other's world, this book reminds us of the wonders that lie in our brief existences in the universe.

With this book, the author, once again, succeed in threading heavy philosophical questions into easy light-hearted dialogues between its characters. The tone is a bit sadder than his other books', but that's what makes the writer's messages more powerful.
