Introduction to Zen Training is a book written by Omori Sogen first published in 2002 (I think). As the title obviously implies, this book serves to introduce its readers to the practice of Zen. Zen, to put it simply, is a practice of attaining one's true self-nature through meditation. The meditation is usually done in a sitting condition called zazen. In this book, the author touches briefly on all of the important aspects of Zen and selectively dives on parts that he considers most important and more approachable for newcomers.
I think this book is a fascinating book for anyone, not just the people that are interested in Zen. I'm mostly engaged by its interesting rhetorics and stories that not only illustrates the ideas behind Zen but also provides a peek into the history and culture that breeds and nurtures Zen in its stages of understandings and realization. Although, by the end of the book, I find myself more confused about the teaching than I was before, I think ultimately the book serves its purpose by enticing people to learn about Zen more themselves and providing clear methodical steps to follow on their own Zen journey.
One problem I have with this book is it feels kind of jagged at times and, just like the practice of Zen itself, requires a concentration of one's state of mind. You would have to do more than one reading to totally grasp all the ideas that this book presented. However, it's still a fascinating read nonetheless.
