Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick

Objective reality is a synthetic construct, dealing with a hypothetical universalization of a multitude of subjective realities.

Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick is, as the title suggests, the compilation of 21 short stories written by the infamous sci-fi author that have been individually published throughout his writing career. The book includes titles such as: Beyond Lies the Wub, Paycheck, The King of the Elves, The Minority Report, The Days of Perky Pat, A Little Something for Us Tempunauts, Rautavaara's Case, and many more.

For anyone who's interested with Philip K. Dick's works, I think this book is the one outlet that offers the best window to the author's framework of mind. All of the compiled stories offer a similarity in terms of the future world that he imagined when he was alive. Mostly a world of technological paranoia, invisible secret government, and dystopian post-nuclear (or galactic!) war society. If you enjoy Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheeps? or The Man in the High Castle, you're going to enjoy this book a lot, I guarantee.

My personal favorite title from this book is The Exit Door Leads In. It's a story that cleverly twists a trope of a rebel hero in an authoritarian government. For me, the ending just landed the most impact. For most of the titles, the author plays around with various philosophical and psychological questions, or even ridiculous ones (The Days of Perky Pat is about a post-war Earth society that obsess over a game of dolls.), with the only unifying theme being the stories are set in a futuristic world. There are also a few of stories that arguably belong more in the fantasy genre than the sci-fi one that are included in the book, such as The King of the Elves and Upon the Dull Earth.

Overall, this is a must-read of a book for Philip K. Dick's fans. Or for just about anyone interested in late visions of what society would become today seen from the perspective of one of the most visionary authors from the previous century.
