Crazy Little Heaven - Mark Heyward

Crazy Little Heaven is a book by Mark Heyward first published in 2013. The book depicts the writer's life-changing journey in Indonesia. Mark was an Australian teacher who teaches in a school in Indonesia. Throughout this book, Mark tells the story of his adventure in the deep jungle of Borneo, of how he started a new life in Indonesia, and his commentaries about the country's particularly strange culture and people.

At first, this book might appears to be a diary of a man in his mid-life crisis. It actually is, by the way. However, for me personally, this book is a whole new perspective about my country and about how people from other countries sees it. About things that I may or may not notice before. Some are very familiar, like when he's celebrating Ied in Yogyakarta with his family; some are very alien, like when he's travelling through Borneo where its main transportation route is via its water.

The writer's storytelling style is what I like the most about this book. It's very personal, engaging, and thoughtful. Reading this book makes me feel like I was there with him. Along his lengthy journey from one coast of Borneo to another, every now and then, he shares his thoughts about Indonesia's people, nature, culture, also its religion and politics. A refreshing and interesting point of view.

On a side note, despite the writer's writing skills, there are still some parts of the book that I find quite boring. But, overall Crazy Little Heaven is a worthy read. If you decide to read this book, just remember: It's the journey, not the destination.
