1Q84 Book 3 - Haruki Murakami

Writers have to keep on writing if they want to mature, like caterpillars endlessly chewing on leaves.

This book is the third and final part of Haruki Murakami's 1Q84. Mesmerized by the previous two books, this book automatically became my top grocery list item last week.

And today, as I finished reading the last paragraph of the book, I can say that it doesn't end as how I expected, in various ways. I have balanced opinions about things I like and I don't like about this book and the story of 1Q84, in general.

On the positive end of my opinions, I really really like the realistic approach of the story. Yes, this is a fiction story in a fiction world where there are 2 moons in the sky, but the characters are NOT. The characters are just people like us that believe there should only be 1 moon rotating the earth. I think that's also the main idea of the story that is basically how Tengo and Aomame (and poor Ushikawa) deal with things they can't explain rationally. And this is also why the story flows naturally from the beginning until the end.

On the other end of my opinions, I can't overlook the fact that the writer leaves us, the readers, entirely to connect too many dots by ourselves. You can read the story yourself to maybe understand my point, like "I think this two events are connected, but the story just goes on with other things and left them unexplained." This kind of storytelling is similar to Ex Machina's (2015) that mostly leave the audiences to guess what happened in the story, but with much more loose way of interpretations. Ultimately, I can't seem to appreciate this approach of the story, but at the same time, I don't dislike it as it is also thought-provoking in some ways.

Overall, 1Q84 is an amazing story worth reading and I can see why so many people like it.
