The War of The Worlds - H. G. Wells

"This isn't a war," said the artilleryman. "It never was a war, any more than there's war between man and ants."

The War of The Worlds is a classic sci-fi book by H. G. Wells first published in 1898. The story follows the event of unknown Martians arrival on England. The hostile aliens wrecked havoc and killed many people that cross their path. Any human's struggle to fight back seems insufficient against the overwhelming power of Martian's machinery and weapons.

It's the second book of the writer that I've read after The Time Machine. While I personally can't really appreciate the writer's tendency to use difficult words (it is really difficult, isn't it? I don't know), I would be lying if I say I didn't enjoy it. Like in The Time Machine, the main thing about this story is not the characters, but the events happening to the characters. Like the anonymous main character, we, as the readers, are the spectator of the extraordinary and mind-blowing event that had happened overnight within our daily lives. Our imaginations of the unknown threats keep the engagement of this book as we learn more and more about the nature of the invaders.

Overall, although not everyone'll like this book, The War of The Worlds is an exciting and inspirational work of writing. Definitely a must-read for sci-fi fans.
